Why MBA?

Well it is the most significant question asked in a b.school interview.Well here are some reasons why i would want to do an MBA.

I had been doing a summer training in PWC,kolkata. It was a 9 to 5 routine everyday. One day I arrived on time in my seat, turned on my computer and started working on my assignments. On that day i realised that i was missing something.I looked around. Some of the empoyees had a private cabin while some had an access-limited cabin.I wondered what was going on.Why was my seat in the open space while the few of them shared such aristrocracy.I began enquiring about these esteemed employees. It did not take a long time for me to raelise that i was very curious that day.
Curiousity got the better half of me.I wanted to know
1.how the work force, money, profits were distributed
2.why in a bilion's population only these people were woring in PWC.
3.how does the compnay manage the everyday resources.
4.how the branches of PWC are coordinated.
4.who is handling the employee facilities like transportation, food, lavatories.
5.so many people writing something on their computer, some creating codes and softwares.where do they go to.
6.who decides what salary a person must get.
Its not just curiousity that is the driving force behind my pursuit for MBA,i have other reasons as well.Well i have a long term goal of starting up a business(and not self employment). For that i need to have capital.I need direction, i need relevant information, i need networking. In short i need to know a company in-and-out.For all these reasons i need to do MBA.

Doing an MBA from a reputed B school is very important. There are several reasons why
1. B schools are supposed to be a constant information source.
2. Interaction with corporate leaders gives a first hand opinion about them.Reading their biography often makes us blend with the author's opinion,so forming an independent opinion gets restricted.
3.There is an atmosphere where innovation is developing and like minded people are bringing it to existence giving shape.Dont you want to be a part of it?
4.Fierce competetion will definitely compel you to manage time in an efectively. Some people call competetions self awareness.

How i spend my summer vacations,2009(Time Management)

Well there was a time i did not know the java programming language. Now i do.All thanks to Mindtree Pvt ltd.(MT)

There was a one month break between 6th and 7th semester in my college.Since i was preparing for CAT exams,i thought this was the best time for preparations. But MT offered us a Remote Internship programme(RIP) for 2 month duration.I was already a temporary employee at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) by the time i came to know it,yet I volunteered to co-ordinate the Mindtree programme.

There was another friend of mine,Ayan Modak who co coordinated this event alongside me.MT selected 24 students and i was also in the list.

PWC had some office timings (10am to 6pm) i had to maintain. And  MT's programme was RIP based, which meant i had to report to my Project Mentor,Miss Madhumala Sonkamblemadanlal (an employee of MT,Bangalore) each and every day via emails.

So now came the question of Time Management.I bravely ventured in this programme not knowing what would be the output.

Initially i was in a group of 3 students in PWC, and in a group of 3 different students in MT.Some days later,a fellow group member of MT was rejected from the programme because of his absence. It gave me sickness because i always feared not being able to do all of them.

I started spending more hours towards our MT project after PWC office hours for 2 reasons.1st is that there was very little time and 2nd is that i had lost a group member in MT and our group comprised of 2 members only.

Ayan Modak and myself. We were 2 idiots staring at each other each and every day not knowing how to begin our project at MT and that too in a language we were not aware of ie JAVA.

Sometimes i was too frustrated because i had to attend coaching classes as well(for CAT exam). Finally out of the 24 students only 16 of us completed the various projects assigned to us from MT.Check out some of our faces.I am in 3rd from left in the last row.Ayan Modak is 2nd from left in the same row.

Even after rigorous hard work, pain, sleepless nights and completion of 2 projects i could not feel the sigh of relief ,i had pressures. My preparations for CAT exam was still going on and my college  reopened after the summer break. There was so much stress during the vacations.

I had not seen a movie, not even talked at any of my friends/gfs because i knew i would have to go out for tea/snacks/outing with them.So i had closed all the doors of socializing and entertainment at that moment.

It was the most memorable vacation break ever.In my blog titled "Project at Mindtree(MT) "i have described the projects i undertook.

Project at Mindtree(MT)

During my summer break 2009,there was a Remote Internship Programme (RIP) conducted by Mindtree during that period. RIP meant we were required us to report to our mentor Madhumala Sonkamblemadanlal (Mindtree employee of Bangalore) each and every day via email and describe our progress.

i made a software "Product Billing System" during this period.

Some of the features of my project are as follows.
Project Name= Product Billing Systems
Operating System=Windows XP.
Programming Languages used= JAVA,SQL.
Softwares used =Mysql, NetBeans,JDBC.
Mode= SDLC (Software development Life cycle).

This generic software can be used by shopkeepers in their stores for easy transactions. Most of you have been to a shopping mall where they use a bar code reader to make bills. Our software is designed to make it more user friendly.

There is a user menu which recognizes if you are the administrator or the salesperson of the shop. After you are logged in successfully you get your individual menu. All the items that you need to query, update, delete, add a new item, add a new salesperson, are available in the menu. Also when a customer makes a purchase, the salesperson will be guided into sub menus where he can press appropriate buttons to select the items only.
The insides have been done by me.So just select all the items, and number of items and press 'enter'.
Inside i have written functions that will auto calculate individual discounts(eg 5% off on 50gm shampoo),total discounts for a certain amount(eg if you purchase Rs 2500 or more),tax on Vat,Payment mode deduction(eg you ar surcharged 2% if you pay by credit card).
The best feature is that the administrator can modify all these above values as per his discretion.
The picture below will tell you how the internal work is going on.Well it was not a lengthy one,but we took a long time to complete since we did not know JAVA and it was done in SDLC mode and thus numerous documentation had to be made.SRS,HLD,LLD are some of the major ones. Also we used error handling techniques and test cases.

My College Projeect

Well its the outcome of a long struggle. We were finally able to make a switching systems with the help of the printer port of the computer. On the left is an image showing the place to find a printer port.On the right is a n external printer jack(hand-made)from
which we pull a few wires to bring it down to a breadboard.Below is a picture of the breadboard with LEDs connected. We also used a small fan for the test.
Now after establishing the connections,we turned on the PC and using Unix operating systems,we wrote a simple C program to make a user menu of switches, where the user is capable of turning on and off any switch as per his choice. Also for a better effect we made a display of timer to show a sequence in which the lights may glow on and off in a sequential manner.Following is an image showing LEDs 2,4 and 6 are glowing.

Well the logic is very simple and requires the user to know the bit number. For example 00000011 (base 2) would imply that we want to glow 1st and 2nd lights. So consider its binary equivalent ie 3.So if you use outb (3,BASE); you will know that pins 1 and 2 have received some current whereas the other pins have zero current. Here BASE imply the starting address of the printer port.It is usually 0x378.Now you can use any logic and swap values for a better presentation.Well this is my project members, and below is me.
